New Fiction

Watching You by Helen Fields – On the dark streets of Edinburgh, a killer is waiting.  When a body is found, it is only the beginning.  Soon there will be seven more.  In the city’s hospital, renowned surgeon Beth Waterfall is grieving.  Her beloved only daughter fell prey to a vicious stalker a year previously – and now he’s coming for her too.  Edinburgh’s police are desperate.  After one body comes another, and then another.  The brutal deaths are all seemingly unconnected, yet DS Lively and forensic profiler Dr Connie Woolwine know they are dealing with a serial killer – they just need to prove it.  But time is running out, and Beth Waterfall already looks set to be the next victim.

Paper Heart by Cecelia Ahern – Pip’s world is small.  But it’s about to become a whole lot bigger.  For years she’s tucked away her dreams, shrinking herself into the space left behind – like the delicate origami she creates alone in her room.  Then hope comes from an unlikely place: an astronomer from the local observatory.  He teaches her to look up at the stars, and to see a world far bigger and more beautiful than she ever imagined.  And perhaps in that big, beautiful universe there’s someone waiting for her.  If she can find the courage to open her heart.  Pip never stopped dreaming, but now it’s time for her to live – and maybe even to fall in love.

False Witness by Phillip Margolin – Years ago, attorney Karen Wyatt exposed corruption in the police force and the district attorney’s office and in the process, succeeded in getting her client exonerated in court.  But in doing so, she put a target on her own back.  Wyatt was set up on fake drug charges, disbarred and imprisoned, and left to rot by the very people she tried to expose.  That is, until the conspiracy itself unraveled and her innocence was proven.  Released, reinstated to the bar, and awarded a hefty compensation, Wyatt is determined to find out who ordered her to be set up – but the key figures in the conspiracy were either murdered or are beyond reach in witness protection.  Putting the compensation money to good use, Wyatt again became a practicing defense attorney.  Her current client is either guilty of a heinous murder or is a too-trusting patsy set up by an acquaintance for a crime he didn’t commit.  But as Wyatt starts to learn, that’s just one piece of an increasingly complex puzzle.

The Hawk is Dead by Peter James – Roy Grace never dreamed a murder investigation would take him deep into Buckingham Palace.  Her Majesty Queen Camilla is aboard the Royal Train, heading to a charity even in Sussex, when disaster strikes – the train is derailed.  A tragic accident or a planned attack?  Minutes later, when a trusted aide is shot dead by a sniper, the police seem to have their answer.  Yet, despite all the evidence, Roy Grace is not convinced The Queen was the intended target.  Finding himself alone in his suspicions and fighting against the scepticism of his colleagues and the Palace itself, Grace pursues his own investigation.  But the stakes are raised even higher when a second murder occurs and Grace risks becoming embroiled in a very public catastrophe.  Or even mortal danger.  Failure at this level is not an option.  But time is running out before the killer in the Palace strikes again.
